Val Moor Will be Sadly Missed

Sadly our President since 1960s, Val Moore recently passed away. Val was a founder of the Art Society and will be sadly missed. She was known by many and we are sure some of you will wish to pay your respects. The funeral is at Babworth crematorium on Tuesday 10th December at 12.00. Val was a primary school teacher at Thrumpton School for many years. She was a keen painter and very clever craftswoman who could put her hand to many things. Val had a keen interest in gardening and had a great knowledge of plants. She often opened our exhibitions with a talk and was an excellent and interesting speaker with a remarkable memory for events, people and places and also with a good sense of humour.
Now is not really the time but by the AGM in March we need to be thinking of a new President...someone to be our figurehead and to help promote the society. If anyone has suggestions please contact Paul or the art society e mail: retfordartsociety@yahoo.com

The Methodist Chapel Autumn Exhibition

The Society would like to thank everyone involved for making the Autumn exhibition one of the most successful exhibitions the Society has ever held.
We would also like to thank the Methodist Chapel staff for giving us the exhibition space.
Thanks to all those wonderful people who visited the exhibition and purchased our art.

The exhibition was in Grove St Methodist Chapel again and went off very smoothly. The minister and staff and volunteers made us very welcome and all went to plan. We are now housing all the exhibition boards at the chapel and occasionally they will be used by the chapel. The preview night went well although less paintings were sold overall than usual. We need more buyers so do invite anyone you think might be interested in the preview night! The minister Julie gave an opening speech and refreshments were provided by the volunteers. A small profit was made from the exhibition and we have invested in more advertising materials like banners.
The Gordon Goodison prize for the public’s favourite painting went to Rob Bealby for his abstract painting Blue Harmonies. The raffle was won by Alan Hazard. The prize was a painting kindly donated by Beryl Wood, the wife of the artist Roger Wood, who recently passed away. Avianne Gamblen won a raffle painting of Bamburgh Castle, also painted by a local artist.

The Society had a busy July, finishing with an instructive workshop by Paul Talbot on using light and shade in water colour paintings. Otherwise, through into August, members were out and about making the best of the summer weather to capture our beautiful countryside, and there are several paintings waiting to be finished. If you would like to join the outdoor painting group, contact retfordartsociety@yahoo.com and ask for their information.
